As a clinical psychologist working in a maximum security prison, I provided psychological service for local inmates and inmates with various nationalities and ethnic origins around the globe, of which around 20% of clients were non-local. Specifically, I (i) managed inmates' risks of self-harm by continued assessment, monitoring and intervention; (ii) personalized treatment for their adjustment reactions and psychopathology (e.g., depression, anxiety, and problematic anger), and (iii) conducted psychological assessments and reports for statutory requirements.

Feeling depressed after transient loneliness is unpleasant but common among adolescents. Fortunately, this could be part of a normal process that supports adolescents in achieving long-term social health.

Emotion Differentiation in Adolescents: Short-term Trade-offs with Regulation Variability and Emotion Intensity

Although emotion differentiation (ED) is believed to be beneficial for mental health, it has short-term trade-offs: Heightened ED is followed by more unpleasant feelings and less changes in emotion regulation strategies.

A Theory-Informed Emotion Regulation Variability Index: Bray–Curtis Dissimilarity

Emotion

In daily life, individuals may switch from using one strategy to another to regulate their emotions. We validated that Bray-Curtis dissimilarity, an index from ecology, outperforms other commonly used indices in capturing this.
